Saxophone Repertoire Survey Dear Saxophone Professor, I am currently a Graduate saxophone student at the University of Minnesota- Duluth. As a project for my Graduate Research and Bibliography class, I am trying to identify trends in saxophone repertoire: Are the “standard” (typically French) pieces giving way to later twentieth century compositions? If so, what pieces have been replaced, and which pieces are taking their place? Thank you for your response to this survey. You can either fill out this form and send it back to me as an attachment or feel free to answer the questions as part of an email. Please reply to this survey to me NO LATER than Friday, December 11, 2009. Sincerely, John Horgeshimer Duluth, MN 218-464-7097 1. Please give at least five examples of pieces your saxophone professor considered “standard saxophone repertoire” that you studied/performed while an undergraduate student: 2. Please give at least five examples of pieces you consider “standard saxophone repertoire” that you assign your undergraduate students: 3. Please give examples of pieces that have been composed in since 1975 that you consider part of the “standard saxophone repertoire” and explain why these pieces should be part of the “standard saxophone repertoire.” 4. Please give your opinion as to how “standard saxophone repertoire” has changed since 1975. 5. Please give examples of “standard saxophone repertoire” that has been replaced within the last thirty years. 6. Where did you do your undergraduate work, and with whom did you study?

John, I suggest that you do the research to contact professors directly, lest you get a skewed ratio. There is a statistically significant segment of the classical saxophone world that no longer participates much in NASA and likely would take some degree of issue with your assertion that the old standards are "typically French". Additionally, I think you are more likely to get more responses if you contact the professors personally by email. Whatever the case with the responses, it would be wonderful if you would share the results of your research with the NASA community.
