I will be teaching saxophone at the Sewanee Summer Music Festival this summer. Saxophone has not been a part of the festival for a number of years so I am extremely happy to jump start saxophone study at the SSMF this year. The festival takes place on the campus of the University of the South in Sewanee, TN, which is located near I-24 atop the Cumberland Plateau between Nashville (1.5 hours away by car) and Chattanooga (45 minutes away by car). The campus is one of the most beautiful college campuses in the country, situated on 13,000 forested acres and featuring stunning gothic architecture. The saxophone session will be June 25–July 10 and the cost for this 16-day program is $1800, all-inclusive. Participating saxophonists will focus on saxophone quartets and solo repertoire via private lessons, coachings, and repertoire classes. There will be some classes offering an introduction to jazz style and improvisation. All students perform in weekly chamber music concerts and have the opportunity to compete in the Sewanee Summer Music Festival Concerto Competition: website Guest artists include the Brooklyn Rider String Quartet in addition to numerous faculty chamber music events. This session is open to saxophonists from the ages of 15 through 23. Both age and playing ability will be considered when determining placement in saxophone chamber groups. All application materials, including a deposit of $250, must be received by May 15, 2011. The remaining $1550 must be paid by May 30, 2011. Please go to website for application procedures and more information about the program, student housing, etc. Please contact me directly with any specific questions about the saxophone curriculum. You can reach me on Facebook, send me an email (griffiths_amy@columbusstate.edu), or call me at (706) 593-7789. I'll be glad to hear from you! -Amy Dr. Amy Griffiths, saxophone Schwob School of Music, Columbus State University Sewanee Summer Music Festival
