Hello everyone, Things have been slow in the forum as of late, so I thought I would toss this out there - I'm sure everyone will have an opinion! What are the top ten all-time pieces for saxophone? If you want, think of it as your favorite ten pieces, or even "what pieces should every saxophonist know?" It's hard keeping it to ten! What are your choices? Here is my list (for the moment!): Debussy Rapsodie Ibert Concertino da Camera Glazounov Concerto Creston Sonata Demersseman Fantasie sur un Theme Original Noda Mai or Improvisations Desenclos Prelude, Cadence, et Finale Denisov Sonate Muczynski Sonata Tanada Mysterious Morning -- Steve Stusek website

That's a great list, Steve, and a tough question. Here's my own short list for now, in no particular order and subject to change: Dahl Concerto Villa-Lobos Fantasia Husa Concerto Ibert Concertino Glazounov Concerto Milhaud Scaramouche Creston Sonata Brant Concerto Dorsey Oodles of Noodles Wiedoeft Saxophobia (I included the last two many to how they popularized the instrument, and threw the Brant in solely for how it "stretched" the boundaries of the saxophone at that time). Roland Colsen

Here are my top ten "need to know" or "most often played" pieces - not necessarily my favorites, although many of my favorites are on this list: Ibert Concertino da Camera Glasunov Concerto Creston Sonata Villa-Lobos Fantasia Debussy Rhapsodie Milhaud Scaramouche Bozza Aria Desenclos Prelude, Cadence et Finale Maurice Tableaux de Provence Dahl Concerto It would be interesting to see a study of the most-often-performed works, how they have changed over time, and how (or if) they differ by country and region. Maybe some doctoral student will do it soon for his thesis. -Ryan Janus website

It's always worthwhile for us to think about our instrument. Thanks for encouraging us to do so, Steve. You suggested that we consider "what pieces every saxophonist should know"; we might also want to ask ourselves how well do we know each of these pieces that we've listed. Ibert Concertino da camera Glazounov Concerto Heiden Sonata Creston Sonata Husa Concerto Dahl Concerto Denisov Sonata Villa-Lobos Fantasia Maurice Tableaux de Provence Feld Sonata (alto or soprano, your choice)
