Built up palm keys

I just got my high F key built up with cork. I don't want to just leave it though. I feel it would last longer if something was put over it to protect it. The shop that did it for me didn't put anything on the cork though. What works best to put on the cork for a better feel and to protect it.

If you are happy with the configuration of the existing riser and don't wish to alter it, you can protect and preserve it with clear fingernail polish.

I have had good luck with a product called Plasti-Dip intended for coating tool handles and available at many hardware stores. It comes in black, clear and red. In the past I have used it to coat the Runyon risers so that the were sealed to the palm or side keys; the effect is similar to shrink-wrap, leaving a thin coating of rubber encasing the riser and enough of the key pedestal to hold the riser in place.

3 or 5 minute epoxy also works well. I used that on my cork palm key risers at least 10 years ago, and they are still in perfect condition. Joren Cain
