Ficher Tull wrote a piece called 'Colloquy For Saxophone And Percussion'. The composition is about 13 minutes long and makes use of color changes and jazz influences. It is very approachable and should be easy to prepare in 6 weeks time. This composition is included on the CD listed below. Good Luck! Song Book for alto saxophone and marimba by David Maslanka is a very nice piece. It has seven relatively short movements. It is published by Carl Fischer in the Carl Fischer Chamber Music series. Gabe Fadale

+8 by Dennis DeSantis is a great piece for tenor sax and drum set. It has been recorded by the Yesaroun' Duo, and I believe you can find a recording on their website.

There is a relatively new piece, Tongue and Groove, by composer and very fine marimba player, Robert Paterson. It actually comes in two versions, either a 6 or 4 mallet version. Rob and I recently recorded both versions. Rob will have the 6 mallet version on his new CD featuring all of his 6 mallet marimba works and the 4 mallet version will be on my new CD to be released in a couple of months. You can see part of the score here: website Jeremy Justeson

I would suggest Ekhart Kopetski's Shadows of Wood (Eckhard is in Germany, I believe "eckhard@eckhard-kopetzki.de") or Paul Siskind's Memoriale (Paul is at SUNY Potsdam) for saxophone and Marimba. Both are very learnable in your time-frame and are good pieces. There are a number of other good pieces including Reginald Bain's Luminescent, John Fitz Rogers' Release (both on the South Carolina music faculty), and Nathan Daughtrey's Strange Dreams. Good luck and feel free to contact me directly if you need more contact information for any of the composers. Cliff Leaman email
