I'd like to buy a small digital recorder to use during student lessons and quartet rehearsals. I'd like to find something that allows easy downloads to my Mac computer or to an iPod, so I can quickly transfer material to my students. Does anyone have any suggestions? Thank you. Karen Roll Gardener

I use a Zoom H2 digital recorder in my teaching. It records in mono or stereo and has great sound. It connects to a Mac or PC with a USB cable and you can email rehearsal/lesson recordings to students via email. I recommend it.

I'll second the Samson Zoom H2/H4 suggestion. I liked mine so much that we've bought four of them for the department, to check out for faculty and student use.

I've also had great results with the Edirol R-09 for lessons and chamber rehearsals. It has built in dual mics, records in 24-bits, and connects with USB. Prices vary, but you could probably find one for around $300.

I've used the Edirol R-09HR for about a year now, and it has completely changed my playing and listening. It offers a myriad of recording qualities, records to MP3s for extremely easy transfer, and is very intuitive to use. It stores data on an SD card for easy sharing and organization. It saves the files by the date and time, keeps the recording constant, uses two high-sensitivity condenser mics on-board (with connections to add headphones for listening or a mic for placed recording), and is incredibly portable and easy to use. I work at a consumer electronics retailed, and have seen and sold a few of these. It is the recorder with the highest customer satisfaction, offers the most features (though it does cost a pretty penny), and is made by one of the most reliable names in recording (Roland). It's the best portable recorder for easy of use and quality, not to rave about it. But when you watch interviews- like in the locker room after the game- journalists not using mics connected to cameras are using this recorder. The difference between the Edirol and the Zoom is like the difference between the 875EX and the 62II. Best quality and best bang for the buck when you consider benefits and abilities it offers. Here's the regular R-09 website Here's the High Res R-09HR website

I'd like to say that I have a zoom H2 & I use it all the time with my students. It's has great sound quality, it's easy & cheap! I also use my iphone voice recorder a lot. Sound quality isn't so good, but ease of use can't be beat!

I too like the Edirol R-09. I have my students bring their own SD cards to lessons, record with the R-09 on their card and they simply take it home and play it on their computer. Works great!

I would also recommend the Zoom H2 recorder. It is easy to use, portable, compatible on a variety of platforms, and pretty affordable for most students.
