A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT, 2/14/11 Members of the North American Saxophone Alliance: Our next North American Saxophone Alliance Biennial Conference is scheduled for March 15-18, 2012, at Arizona State University. Professor Timothy McAllister and the Herberger Institute School of Music at Arizona State University have agreed to host this event. Members of the NASA Program Committee are Taimur Sullivan – chair, Connie Frigo, Michael Ibrahim, Brad Leali, and Kenneth Tse. Competition Coordinators are David Dees, Carrie Koffman, and Stephen Jones. The people listed above are an all-star cast and we have every confidence that they will do all they can to provide us with an exciting and inspirational conference. We will do our best to keep you apprised of information as conference details develop. We have a new member of the NASA Executive Committee. Brad Leali has joined us as the NASA Jazz Coordinator. Brad is Professor of Saxophone at the University of North Texas where he directs the Three O’Clock Band. Brad has performed as lead alto in the Harry Connick Jr. Orchestra, the Count Basie Orchestra and has recorded five CDs. He has also performed at the Village Vanguard, the Blue Note, Lincoln Center, and Kennedy Center. It is a pleasure to have him with us, working to promote jazz performance and pedagogy. The NASA Executive Committee recently approved financial support for the publication of [I]Eugene Rousseau: With Casual Brilliance[/I] by Thomas Liley, NASA’s Director of Scholarly Publications. It will be the second work in NASA's Biographical Series, following [I]Larry Teal: There Will Never Be Another You[/I]. The biography on Larry Teal can be purchased at the bookstore at the NASA website. Joe Rivelli, a Business Development Manager with the Indiana Convention and Visitors Association, has approached the NASA Executive Committee about the possibility of having a biennial conference at a convention center in Indianapolis. Otis Murphy and Thomas Walsh have expressed an interest in this and in hosting the NASA 2014 Biennial Conference. I recently appointed Cliff Leaman – chair, Debra Richtmeyer, Scott Turpen, Tom Walsh and Otis Murphy to a new ad hoc committee to investigate this possibility. Only research and fact-finding are being done at this time. At the NASA website there are 18 forums available for you to use as a means of communication with the membership at large. At these forums you can advertise summer camps, graduate assistantships, sell saxophones, and ask for information on compositions and much more. These forums are a very helpful feature at the NASA website and I encourage you to use them. Please check them out! My hope and wish is that you will attend, perform and enjoy the many regional NASA conferences that we have scheduled this year. It would be wonderful to have a written synopsis of the highlights of each conference posted at our NASA website.
