Looking for the right doctoral program

A student graduating with an MM in Contemporary Music from my institution is looking for the right doctoral program. The challenge he’s facing is that he’s a composer/vibist who writes music that doesn’t fit the common expectations for “concert” music or “jazz.” He is one of the most inventive, distinctive composers I know, and one of the most deeply musical students I’ve worked with in over 20 years of teaching. I want to advise him as to where he should look, but I don’t know composition programs around the country well enough. Those institutions with which I’m most familiar generally expect a student to have a traditional WEAM or jazz profile. Does anybody out there have suggestions? ~Tom Bergeron, Western Oregon University

Yes, although his primary interest is composing for live performance.

I can recommend my friend Mark Engebretson at UNC-Greensboro. If your student wants to check out Mark and his music, website

Depending on his interests, there's a new PhD program coming on line at LSU in performance and/or composition and/or research and digital media. Contact Stephen David Beck (sdbeck@lsu.edu) for more information.

I forwarded your message to one of our composers at The Hartt School (Ken Steen), and he said, "It might be too late (for next fall), but it may be good to discuss with him further -- as you know we are not the most traditional composition department out there and do, in fact, nurture those who cross, unite, and challenge traditional boundaries . . . ". Have your student contact Ken (steen@hartford.edu) if he's interested. Good luck!
