Bio:

Sumner Truax joined the faculty of the Lawrence University Saxophone Studio in the fall of 2015. A virtuoso performer and a masterful teacher, Mr. Truax is committecd to performing the music of our time.  A frequent collaborator with composers, Mr. Truax has brought to life new works for solo saxophone and saxophone quartet. 

Sumner earned his Master of Music degree in saxophone performance and literature and a certificate in Arts Leadership at the Eastman School of Music where he served as a teaching assistant to Dr. Chien-Kwan Lin. He also holds a Bachelor of Music degree in saxophone performance and instrumental/general music education from Lawrence University.

Ensemble Bio: Dr. Ax is Drew Worden (drums) and Sumner Truax (sax), a duo performing between the boundaries of jazz, the avante-garde, and contemporary classical. Dr. Ax blends “off the cuff” improvisations with written music from today’s most prominent living composers. Combining the athleticism of their rock/jazz roots with the finesse of their classical training at the Eastman School of Music, Dr. Ax brings high-octane performances to each show. Dr. Ax performs the music of: Karlheinz Stockhausen, Ken Ueno, Jacob ter Veldhuis, Glenn Kotche (Wilco), Christian Lauba, as well as original compositions.
