Bio:

Saxophonist, composer, educator, Joseph David Spence has made a name as an advocate for the saxophone in the concert hall and in his own compositions. His teachers include some of the most respected saxophonists in America: Carrie Koffman, Christopher Bartz, and John Hallberg. He has also participated in several national saxophone conferences working closely with highly esteemed saxophonists: Timothy McAllister, James Umble, and Marco Albonetti. Spence’s musicianship has also earned him esteem in competitions having won first place in the MTNA Chamber Music Competition for the states of California and Connecticut, the MTNA Young Artist Competition for the state of Connecticut, and second place for the Eastern Connecticut Symphony Orchestra’s Instrumental Competition.


Spence is pursuing his Dual Master's Degree in Saxophone Performance and Composition at The Hartt School, and currently holds a Bachelor of Music degree from California State University, Fullerton.

Ensemble Bio: Duo TPK is comprised of saxophonists Joseph David Spence and Giovanna Virgil. As active chamber musicians, Spence and Virgil have played in a variety of ensembles together previously and now are excited to present the debut of their own duo.

Giovanna Virgil

Bio:

Giovanna Virgil is a Saxophone Performance major with a minor in Performing Arts Management at The Hartt School (University of Hartford) where she is a student of Carrie Koffman.

Virgil is a native of Manorville, NY but has since moved to Hartford, CT for school. She is an active chamber musician and soloist in the Hartford area. Her current chamber groups include CTRL+ALTO+DEL (Giovanna Virgil: saxophone, Nick Borghoff: Viola)and The Penumbral Quartet (Owen Nichols: soprano saxophone, Aislinn Walters: alto saxophone, Giovanna Virgil: tenor saxophone, Garrett Evans: baritone saxophone). She performs regularly throughout the year with the Hartt Saxophone Studio's Saxophone Ensemble and The Hartt School's Omni-Ensemble.

In addition to her saxophone playing, Virgil is a woodwind doubler performing in many pit orchestras through the years. Teaching at Song-A-Day Music Center in Coventry, CT, Virgil is currently accepting woodwind students through the studio and privately.
