Presentation Venue: Corbett
Presentation Title: Stix + Lix
Type of Presentation: Professional Classical Chamber Music Performance
Proposal Duration: 17
Bio: An avid educator and performer, saxophonist Ben Harting’s adventurous spirit has led to solo, chamber, and large ensemble performances across Europe, Asia, and South America. While his first love was the full, warm timbre of the saxophone, his time spent exploring the sounds of other cultures and his study of the expanding saxophone repertoire has led to an appreciation of the extended techniques so prevalent in contemporary literature. In addition to his administrative responsibilities as the University of Missouri School of Music Admissions Coordinator, Ben regularly performs with the saxophone-percussion duo Stix + Lix, serves as the resident saxophonist of the Columbia Civic Orchestra, and maintains a private studio of junior high and high school saxophone and piano students. He holds a Master of Music degree in saxophone performance from the University of Missouri.
Ensemble Bio: Stix + Lix is the first staff ensemble at the University of Missouri School of Music comprised of saxophonist Ben Harting and percussionist Abby Rehard. The duo first grew out of a desire to continue making music while both members worked administrative positions, and it has become a way to explore and expand the growing repertoire for saxophone and percussion. The duo enjoys a busy work-life schedule spending time deep in the cogs of the inner-workings of the School of Music, performing recitals, and teaching lessons and ensembles in their respective disciplines. In addition to their commitment to the promotion of more conventional saxophone and percussion contemporary repertoire, Stix + Lix has a strong appreciation for light-hearted pieces with unorthodox instrumentation such as squeak toys, hand-clapping, and toy piano.
