Bio:

Dr. Seth Carper is a saxophonist and music educator teaching in the Jazz Studies program at Texas State University.  Leading his quartet and co-leading the NOW Jazz Orchestra (New Original Works), Seth is an integral part of the central Texas jazz community. He holds a DMA and MM in Jazz Performance, and a BM in Music Education.   As a performer, he has shared the stage with such jazz greats as Ernie Watts, Vincent Herring, Maynard Ferguson, Pete Christlieb, Bill Mobley, Jack Walrath, Joel Frahm, Andrey Heyward, and Jerry Dodgion. 

Ensemble Bio:

Dr. Carper, Dr. Haight, Dr. Pardo, and Dr. Hamrick are on jazz faculty members at Texas State University in San Marcos, TX.  Wayne Salzmann II is an alumni of Texas State University's jazz program and is currently the instructor of jazz drumset at University of Texas at Austin.  The group regularly performs in Austin, TX.

Russell Haight

Bio:

Dr. Russell Haight is an Assistant Professor of Saxophone and Improvisation at Texas State University. He maintains a busy performance schedule in Texas, and has played throughout the U.S., Canada, South America, and China. In 2017, Haight released Destination, his first album as a leader, winning a Silver Medal in the Global Music Awards. As a researcher and educator, he has presented or performed at the International Saxophone Symposium, the North American Saxophone Alliance Conference, the Jazz Education Network conference, Texas Music Educators Association conference, the ProJazz Institute in Chile, and at universities throughout the southwestern region. As a jazz artist, he has performed with luminaries such as Bobby Shew, Vincent Herring, Ralph Bowen, Kirk Covington, Joel Frahm, Andre Hayward, Rufus Reid, Bill Watrous, and the late George Duke.



Utah Hamrick

Bio:

Utah Hamrick is the head of the Jazz Studies program at Texas State University. A jazz educator who holds a bachelor’s degree in Music Education and master’s in Bass Performance from Central Michigan University, and a DMA in Jazz Performance from the University of Texas, Dr. Hamrick frequently performs with Austin-based composer Graham Reynolds, including motion picture soundtracks for Bernie and All is Bright. He has performed with jazz luminaries such as Houston Person, Byron Stripling, Larry Ham, Bill Watrous, and Tommy Igoe, and performed with Willie Nelson for the opening of the ACL Live Moody Theater. He can also be heard on the JazzBonez 2014 release Watch it! on Summit Records and the upcoming animated short The OceanMaker. Currently, he performs in the Austin Symphony Big Band, Magnificent 7, Monster Big Band, Strings Attached, as well as with various Austin and San Antonio artists.
